Quilt patterned gardens

Flowers form amazing quilts in northern Indiana

Beginning May 30, look for a profusion of blooms in 19 quilt-patterned gardens in Elkhart, Nappanee, Shipsewana, Goshen, Bristol, and Wakarusa. More than 100,000 blooms will carpet the designs through Oct. 1, and 18 hand-painted quilt murals decorate the walls of buildings in the towns. One of the floral quilts will be a 900 square foot Star of Hope quilt in Elkhart's Wellfield Botanical Gardens, dedicated to the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. Visiting the quilt gardens is a free, flexible, self-guided tour. For maps to find the quilts, as well as additional information, go to http://www.amishcountry.org/things-to-do/quilt-gardens

Start tracking good eats on the Hoosier Pie Trail

Did you know that the Sugar Cream Pie, otherwise known as Hoosier Pie, is Indiana's contribution to the nation's plethora of pie types such as chess pie and shoo-fly pie? If not, then you just need to taste and compare at different places around the state, such as the Old School Cafe in Pleasant (also try the cobbler), Storie's Restaurant in Greensburg (also try the banana and apple crumb pies), the Attic and Coffee Mill Cafe and Madison (the Dutch apple with caramel icing and the key lime pie are major temptations), and several other places. Get ready to loosen the belt a notch. To locate these and other places, go to http://www.indianafoodways.com
